Pensacola Lighthouse

Constructed in 1858, the Pensacola Lighthouse is still operational and serves as a warning and beacon for Pensacola Harbor. Guests can even climb to the top and enjoy quite a view of Pensacola Naval Air Station and the surrounding waters and beaches.

Tiger Swallowtail

"Bugs are not going to inherit the earth. They own it now. So we might as well make peace with the landlord." -- Thomas Eisner
...
This afternoon Tammy and I were treated to a new backyard visitor. A Tiger Swallowtail or Papilio glaucus Linnaeus, which was flying around between the zinnias and the echinacea.

On the subject of Monarch butterfly's Tammy has already released several this month. She has also rounded up a dozen or so Black Swallowtail caterpillars for the butterfly house.

Butterfly's 2010

“There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it's going to be a butterfly.” - Buckminster Fuller
...
The past couple of weeks have been the start of the Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus Linnaeus) season. The milkweeds have been blooming and producing pods which dispense seeds in a most ingenious way and their leaves have been showing the results of hungry caterpillars. We have also seen a couple Giant Swallowtails (Papilio cresphontes Cramer) flying around which have laid eggs on a citrus tree as well.
