Jacksonville Bound

Last night the Gulf Breeze Lady Dolphins are now 22-4-3 after defeating Jacksonville's Paxon School for Advanced Studies 2-0 in a pretty convincining manner during Regional Semi-Finals. While the score was only 2-0 the Lady Dolphins dominated the match with the ball staying on the Paxon side of the field for the vast majority of the night. The Pensacola News Journal had a fairly decent article about the nights match. The team is playing some of the best soccer they have played all season and now they take their game on the road to play Jacksonville's Bishop Kenny this Friday night in the Regional Finals match. Bishop Kenny defeated Washington High School, Gulf Breeze's arch rival, 2-1 last night.

The Hike

"Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. To keep our faces toward change and behave like free spirits in the presences of fate is strength undefeatable." Hellen Keller

"You can't stay in your corner of the forest waiting for others to come to you. You have to go to them sometimes." - Winnie the Pooh

You just have to love the perspective children bring to everything. The adventure Quinn & Emma had in "hiking around in the country" a.k.a. walking around uncle Clarence's backyard was thouroughly enjoyable to watch from the deck. Watching Quinn & Hayden's excitment when Jimmy and I hiked with them at the Bay Bluffs Park in Pensacola, Fl. a trail that provides a very nice walkway with lots of twists and turns down a cliff to the shore of Pensacola Bay. I long to experience again that innocent sense of adventure & excitment that children have with the world around them.

The Gulf Breeze High School Varsity girls soccer team (20-4-3) won their 15th straight District Championship last night with the 5-0 defeat of Washington High School (17-4-3). The girls soundly defeated their arch rival and will play Panama City Arnold High School next Thursday night in Gulf Breeze. The Pensacola News Journal had a pretty good game report posted this morning.

I truly love watching Ashley and the other kids play competitive sports. I have been watching Ashley and many of her teammates play soccer for several years now and it is so neat to see their work, passion and spirit come together on the field of play.

President Gerald R. Ford (1913-2006)

"A government big enough to give you everthing you want is a government big enough to take everything you have." - President Ford

"I am acutely aware that you have not elected me as your President by your ballots, so I ask you to confirm me with your prayers." - President Ford

As our nation mourns the loss of the 38th President, Gerald R. Ford, I find myself thinking back to what I actually remember concerning the man and his presidency. I was 11 years old and living in Pensacola, Fl when President Ford assumed office on August 9, 1974, in the aftermath of President Nixon's resignation over the Watergate scandal. I actually remember very little and what I do remember is more like vague images rather than specific details. I remember how the Watergate scandal consumed the news I watched and that because of that issue President Nixon resigned. I remember President Ford being made fun of by television talk shows and comedians because he once stumbled while exiting Air Force One. I remember President Ford taking swift military action against the Khmer Rouge of Cambodia for the seizure of the container ship the SS Mayaguez. I remember the controversy when he pardoned President Nixon from the Watergate charges and I remember his loss to President Jimmy Carter in 1976.

As an adult I appreciate more what President Ford's presidency meant for our nation in the context of the time. In the midst of political scandal, criminal activity, the war in Vietnam and a really poor economy our form of government worked. There was not a coup d'etat but a relatively smooth transition of power and control guided by our Constitution and implemented by our elected officials.
